Dev sought for Qt porting

smallbee2It’s early in the game, but there’s chatter right now about setting up a bounty to hire a Haiku developer to fully port the latest version of Qt to this platform.

As I mentioned recently, Qt is an environment that allows programs to be written once and run on multiple platforms, such as Linux, Haiku, Amiga, etc.  There are lots of enticing programs already available, though not all of them run perfectly on Haiku yet.  The word among programmers is that the current Haiku version of Qt is older and still a little buggy here and there.  The goal of this new effort would be to create a solid, stable port of the newest version of Qt.

imagesAs this effort gets itself organized, those initially looking into it are trying to determine the best way to create a bounty or a fundraising pot that will be high profile enough to be noticed by all the Haikuzers, and safe enough to make everyone feel confident about donating to it.

So, what about it?  Let’s hear your input on ways such a bounty could be set up.

I think the best way is to divide it into more subtasks, such as :

1 – Update the current port version to Qt 5 (1000€)
    2 – Solve this problem (300 €)
    3 – Solve another problem (100€)
    4 – Create a media_kit backend for phonon (1000€)
    5 – Fix this minor bug (50 €)

There’s a site for doing that named bountysource…i’m not sure compared to the classic bounties if it have more possibilities of success, but i think more little steps are more easy to achieve than a big leap, so i would give a try….

Way to take this by the horns Dane, would it be possible to solicit digia and other large companys to donate a few $ here and there, plus do a nice bright kickstarter and then canvas the Open Source community. Also we have allot of radio stations running BeOS and Haiku, they should put some skin in the game, this would positively impact them, for instance a DAW could be ported with a functional Jack port.

Bottom line, the people who really need these features need to step up.

I will donate the first $50 if a kickstarter item is set up for this. It looks like Qt is the gateway for all kinds of quality apps for Haiku-OS.

    Keep up the good work.

I would like to suggest to set up a bounty and then try to hire maurice K. He is a developer wo moved from BeOS / Zeta core (mediakit) development to the QT development Team.. so this is maybe the best way to get him back into Haiku and he has a really good potential to finish such a port in a short ammount of time…
